king river (Upper)

The King River flows through many kilometers of breathtaking High Country bushland, nestled amidst towering mountains and unspoiled wilderness. It's remote location adds to the sense of tranquility and seclusion, providing anglers with a true escape into nature. The river's course showcases a diverse range of landscapes, including dense forests, rocky gorges, and sub alpine grazing flats, creating a picturesque backdrop for fly fishing adventures.

The upper reaches and headwaters of the King River is a stunning location for fly anglers. Forming on the western side of the Crosscut Saw below Mount Speculation and Mount Howitt, where pristine creeks and tributaries feed into the main river. Accessing these remote areas requires extensive hiking and remote navigation experience, but the effort is rewarded with pristine fishing waters and the chance to catch wild and elusive trout. The river makes its way past Kings Hut, a popular campground only a short drive from Craigs Hut and Circuit Rd. The river continues along beside King Basin Rd on the northern side of Mount Stirling where there is a number of small camp areas and river access points before running through the next major camp area Pineapple Flat. From here the river travels approximately 20kms to its next access point and camp area, Top Crossing Hut before it soon reaches Lake William Hovel. there are a number of camp sites and access points between the lake and top crossing although a well equiped 4WD is required to navigate the tracks beyond the lake, and the river crossings in the early and late season are often impassable.

The King River epitomises a classic trout stream, characterised by its clear waters and a mix of different water types. It begins with fast-flowing rapids, where pocket water and bubbling runs create ideal feeding zones for trout. As the river meanders through valleys, it gradually slows down, forming deep pools, undercut banks, and enticing riffles. These varied habitats offer numerous opportunities for fly fishing enthusiasts to explore and target trout.

The King River boasts an impressive array of aquatic insects, making it a productive river for fly anglers keen on matching the hatch. Some of the entomology of the river you will encounter is:

  • Mayflies: Throughout the fishing season, several species of mayflies can be found on the King River. Early in the year, Blue-winged Olives (Baetis) dominate the hatches, providing exciting dry fly fishing opportunities. As the season progresses, Pale Morning Duns (Ephemerella) and PMD spinners become prevalent, enticing selective trout to the surface.
  • Caddisflies: Caddisflies are abundant on the King River, offering anglers a diverse range of patterns to imitate. From the early-season emergence of Grannom caddis (Brachycentrus) to the later-season hatches of various net-spinning caddis (Hydropsyche), these insects provide consistent action and dry fly opportunities.
  • Stoneflies: Stoneflies play a significant role in the King River's ecosystem, particularly during the warmer months. Golden Stoneflies (Calineuria) make appearances, attracting the attention of hungry trout. Fishing large stonefly nymph patterns near rocky structures and under overhanging vegetation can yield excellent results.
  • Midges: Midges are a staple food source for the trout throughout the year, especially during winter months or early mornings. Fishing small midge patterns, such as zebra midges or emergers, can be productive when trout are selectively feeding on these tiny insects.

  • Streamer Fishing: The King River's deep pools and undercut banks provide ideal habitats for trout seeking larger prey. Streamer fishing can be highly productive, especially during low light conditions or when targeting territorial, larger fish. Casting and retrieving various streamer patterns, such as Woolly Buggers or Sculpin imitations, can trigger aggressive strikes from predatory trout.

It's worth mentioning that the King River like most in Victoria is known for its trout-friendly regulations, therefor the river should be respected and managed carefully by catch-and-release practices, to ensure the sustainability of the fishery. Conservation-minded anglers are encouraged to handle fish with care and release them unharmed. Using a landing net, observing water and weather temperatures and considering barbless hooks are just some of the ways this can be done, allowing themselves and future generations to enjoy the river's exceptional fishing opportunities.

Beyond its reputation as a trout fishery, the King River offers an immersive outdoor experience. The surrounding wilderness is home to diverse wildlife, including deer, kangaroos, dingoes and various bird species, providing an enchanting backdrop while you cast your line.

In conclusion, the King River is a stunning option for fly fishing enthusiasts seeking both challenging and rewarding experiences. Its breathtaking scenery, diverse insect life, and healthy trout population make it an extraordinary destination for anglers. Whether you prefer dry fly fishing, nymphing, or streamer tactics, the King River offers something for every fly angler, ensuring memories that will last a lifetime.
