The area of Mount Howitt and Mount King Billy sheds more rivers than any other part of the great divide. Large rainfall catchment areas along with alpine springs and snow melt generate a plethora of free flowing streams that converge into the High Country's most well known rivers. The Victorian High Country has generous access for all outdoor enthusiasts including anglers, with well maintained 4X4 and hiking tracks throughout. Brown and Rainbow trout are abundant in these high country rivers and offer a memorable angling experience. The following featured rivers are just some of those that we guide on in the Victorian High Country, along with many other stunning tributaries.
The headwaters of these rivers are often located deep in the back country beyond any 4X4 tracks or defined hiking trails, these headwaters require extensive hiking and remote area navigation skills to access and the alpine weather conditions can be unforgiving. However these areas offer some of the most spectacular fishing in Victoria, consisting of dramatic drops in elevation creating small waterfalls that carve out deep pools in amongst the fast flowing runs ideal for large Brown Trout.
Middle reaches are often lined with stunning High Country camp sites where the river widens into endless runs and riffles, large deep pools form on corners where the river aggressively changes course due to the towering mountain landscape it cuts through
The lower reaches conditions can often be determined by the water level of the lakes they drain in to, Lake Eildion being the most prominent. Lower reaches are typically more accessible and offer slower moving water. conditions in lower section can change rapidly after severe weather as hundreds of small streams, creeks and springs rush to life and fill the main river.
No matter which river or section of river you visit or fish in the Victorian High Country, you will be sure to enjoy
